Wedge Issues Abortion

There are a thousand aspects of this issue and I've struggled over all of them for most of my adult life. An essay/column I wrote for the Duluth tabloid "The Northland Reader" in April of 2002 will give you the best summary of how I approach this subject. The link above will take you to my main website: snowbizz.com

On Oct. 9th, I read an interesting news story about a reduction in US abortion rates. A pro life spokesman wasn't pleased with the increase in abortions among poor women. She said she thought the increase might be because of their lack of education.  I have a different take on the story, to wit:

  • Liberal/Democrat policies have reduced the abortion rate among teens because they encourage sex education and contraception.

  • Conservative/Republican policies have increased abortion rates because of conservative resistance to welfare benefits. By making welfare benefits difficult to attain and diminishing them when they are made available pushes poor/single women to decide that they can't afford to bring their pregnancies to term.

  • For more thoughts read my email to AJ on the subject.
