To the Editor,
Ronald Reagan wanted the Republican Party to be a "big tent" which
would welcome many people. I wish I knew where Minnesota's Republicans are
hiding their big tent. Maybe it's in the Independence Party where so many
Republican moderates have fled. Like me; a third generation, 30 year Republican;
many moderates have been denied a Republican endorsement.
I have no complaint against the young man who won the Republican endorsement for
House District 7A. Alan Johnson is enthusiastic and has other fine qualities. I
simply can not accept the endorsement of the 23 delegates at the recent
convention.
Although I have the greatest respect for Tim Penny and have toyed with the idea
of joining the Independence Party I will remain a Republican. I will sew a
bigger tent and, if elected to the legislature, will work with DFLers,
Republicans, and Independents to straighten out the mess left by the last
legislature. Why me?
For the past six years I have taken on the toughest elective job in town - the
Duluth School Board. The difference between our schools today and their
condition in 1994 when I was first elected is remarkable. Today we are solvent,
stable, and our children's test scores are improving despite the tough decisions
forced on us by declining enrollments. I know where my talents are needed now -
St. Paul.
Duluth has lost half the legislators it had thirty years ago when I moved to
town, most recently, Willard Munger, Sam Solon, and Doug Johnson. No one of
their stature remains to represent us. I intend to fill the void.
